Red Oval Minhas Craft Brewing Monroe, Wisconsin For my first EBDA beer review I thought long and hard about which beer to put forth. I settled on the one in front of me, a Red Oval. This is a Minhas beer from Wisconsin, the same people who bring you mediocre at best beers like Rhinelander and Simpler Times. Both Red Oval and Simpler Times can be purchased at Trader Joe's markets across the country.
First the discription: It's a clean, clear lager that pours very pale straw color. Well carbinated with good head and a slight bit of lacing. Taste: This is a drinkable beer, and not much more. The taste is clean and crisp with little to no body and no after taste but a good mouth feel to it. You can detect a slight bit of corn from the adjunct grains. There's also a slight buttery taste from diacetyl, a byproduct of the fermentation. There is really no aroma to speak of. So that's not a stellar review, so what's this beer doing sitting in front of me? Bottom line: It's $2.99 a sixpack! That's 50 cents a can! Yes, can. Don't waste a glass on this beer. This is the perfect beer to quaf after mowing the lawn or splitting a cord of wood. It's easily drinkable in large quantities and won't break the bank. Now when the wife want's to drag you to Trader Joe's you can begrudginly give in. But take $3 + tax with you. (If you've only got 54 cents they sell singles) |
